Welcome to my "flipped" classroom.
My goal this year it to "flip" my chemistry and physics classes. That simply means students will do schoolwork at home and homework at school. Doing schoolwork at home means watching lecture videos that I have prepared or selected for students. These videos will typically very short and focused allowing students and opportunity to take in the lecture outside of class when they can focus on the material. When they come back to class after having viewed the material they complete the homework at school portion. Since I am not providing in-class lecture, I have more time to help students, answer questions, etc and the students have more time complete all of their assignments in class and not have homework outside of studying for assessments. To be successful, students must watch the videos as they are assigned or they will fall behind. It is also important for students to get into the habit of asking questions when they do not understand.
What is a "flipped" classroom?
The flipped classroom model is gaining popularity in schools becuase of the drasitc increases in student achievment. There are many pros and cons, and I believe that the pros far outweight the cons. The basic idea behind "flipping" the classroom is that students do "school work" at "home and homework" at school. In a flipped classroom, the typical classroom lectures/notes take place on teacher created video that students view before they attend class. students would then arrive in class with a basic knowlege foundation. Since the lecture takes place outside of class that frees up additional classtime for guided practice, independent practice, lab activities, and other forms of instruction/practice. In thoery, students would never have traditional paper based homework because all their work could be completed in the classroom where the teacher can answer questions and offer additional support and help with assignments. The only requirement for homework int he flipped classroom model is that students must watch the videos as assigned to stay current with the information being presented so that they utilize their in-class time correctly.
Viewing new videos would not be required every night, but would need to be watched as they are provided by the teacher. Students can watch them through any internet connection through this website or youtube. Supplemental materials such as PowerPoint slides, notes handouts, etc. will be provided electronically with the video. Students can watch the videos at their convience and can pause, rewind, and rewatch videos as much as they need to.
To be successful, students must watch the videos before attending the class in which they will apply the knowledge. Students should also write down any questions that arise while watching the videos and there will be time each class period dedicated to answering questions the day after a video is assigned.
It is my commitment that all videos are kept to less than 10 minutes in length. Along from watching the videos, students would need to spend time outside of class studying for quizzes and tests, but all daily work, labs, and any other activities will typically be completed in class (provided that students can stay on task during the class time.)
